Celebration held in Clinch Valley Medical Center's Main Lobby

RICHLANDS, VA. - On Wednesday, June 24th, 2026, Clinch Valley Health gathered inside their main lobby to come together to celebrate receiving their "5th Straight A" Hospital Safety Grade presented by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety, for the Spring of 2026. Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

"And that starts with every employee in this organization who is committed to this mission each and every day. So, the real heroes are the folks that are taking care of patients every day, doing all the things keeping those patients safe, and making sure their patient experience with Clinch Valley is the best." said Clinch Valley Health CEO, Peter Mulkey. It was even mentioned that out of the last 26 grading periods, Clinch Valley received an "A" grade 19 times.

Alongside Peter Mulkey's welcome speech, food and refreshments were provided while all being "frog" themed to recognize The Leapfrog Group. VHHA even sent down Abraham Segres, Vice President of Quality & Patient Safety, to join the celebration and even spoke a few words about the great work Clinch Valley Health continues to achieve.

The celebration extended all week long and included other events such as free ice cream from Lou Lou's, new badge reels and charms given out to all departments, and gift raffles drawn throughout the week.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is updated twice each year and is widely recognized as one of the nation's leading indicators of hospital safety and quality. The grade is designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care while encouraging hospitals to continually improve patient safety practices.

For Clinch Valley Health, this fifth consecutive "A" represents more than an award, it reflects a culture where safety, quality, and patient-centered care remain the highest priorities.

Clinch Valley Health thanks its physicians, employees, volunteers, and community members for their continued trust and support. Together, the organization remains committed to advancing healthcare excellence and ensuring every patient receives the safe, compassionate care they deserve.
