Director of Education, Kay Grizzel

RICHLANDS, VA - Clinch Valley Medical Center is proud to announce the promotion of Kay Grizzel, BSN, RN, to Director of Education, recognizing her more than 36 years of dedicated service and commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Since joining Clinch Valley Health in March of 1989, Kay has built an exceptional career defined by compassion, leadership, and a passion for learning. A graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing and Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she has served patients and colleagues in a wide variety of roles throughout the organization.

Kay began her career in psychiatric nursing before expanding her clinical experience in the Clinch Valley's ER. She later spent many years as the hospital’s Night Shift Supervisor, providing leadership and support to clinical teams while ensuring high-quality patient care during overnight operations.

In May 2024, Kay began the role of RN Residency Coordinator, where she quickly made a lasting impact on the hospital’s educational programs. She has led the continued success of Clinch Valley Medical Center’s RN Residency Program while coordinating essential clinical education courses, including Basic Life Support (CPR), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and other professional development opportunities for staff.

Now, as Director of Education, Kay will oversee educational initiatives across the organization, helping ensure employees have access to the training, resources, and support they need to provide exceptional patient care.

Hospital leadership says Kay’s experience and deep understanding of the organization make her an ideal fit for the role.

“Kay has dedicated her career to serving both our patients and our employees,” said Peter Mulkey, Chief Executive Officer of Clinch Valley Medical Center. “She has been a trusted leader, mentor, and educator for decades. Her commitment to excellence and her passion for helping others succeed have strengthened our organization in countless ways. We are thrilled to have her leading our education department.”

Outside of the hospital, Kay enjoys spending time with her family, including her three children and two grandchildren. She also enjoys crafting and baking, hobbies that allow her to relax and express her creativity.

As she begins this new chapter, Kay is eager to continue fostering a culture of lifelong learning at Clinch Valley Medical Center while supporting employees at every stage of their careers.

“I couldn’t be more excited to step into this role,” said Grizzel. “I’m looking forward to learning, growing, and helping others do the same as we continue providing outstanding care to the communities we serve.”
